Speciations and Extinctions in a Self-Organizing Critical Model of Tree-Like Evolution

چکیده
We study analytically a simple model of a self-organized critical evolution. The model considers both extinction and speciation events leading to the growth of phylogenetic-like trees. Through a mean-field like theory, we study the evolution of the local configurations for the tree leaves. The fitness threshold, below which life activity takes place through avalanches of all sizes is calculated. The transition between speciating (evolving) and dead trees is obtained and is in agreement with numerical simulations. Moreover, this theoretical work suggests that the structure of the tree is strongly dependent on the extinction strength. R4sum4. A critical branching process model for biodiversity
Motivated as a null model for comparison with data, we study the following model for a phylogenetic tree on n extant species. The origin of the clade is a random time in the past, whose (improper) distribution is uniform on (0,∞). After that origin, the process of extinctions and speciations is a continuous-time critical branching process of constant rate, conditioned on having the prescribed n...

In a recent paper, Newman [1] surveys the literature on power law spectra in evolution, self-organised criticality and presents a model of his own to arrive at a conclusion that self-organised criticality is not necessary for evolution. Not only did he miss a key model (Ecolab [2,3]) that has a clear self-organised critical mechanism, but also Newman’s model exhibits the same mechanism that giv...
متن کاملSteel Consumption Forecasting Using Nonlinear Pattern Recognition Model Based on Self-Organizing Maps
Steel consumption is a critical factor affecting pricing decisions and a key element to achieve sustainable industrial development. Forecasting future trends of steel consumption based on analysis of nonlinear patterns using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques is the main purpose of this paper. Because there are several features affecting target variable which make the analysis of relations...
متن کاملEcolab, Webworld and self-organisation
Ecolab and Webworld are both models of evolution produced by adding evolution to ecological equations. They differ primarily in the form of the ecological equations. Both models are self-organised to a state where extinctions balance speciations. However, Ecolab shows evidence of this self-organised state being critical, whereas Webworld does not. This paper examines the self-organised states o...

The random-neighbor version of the Bak-Sneppen biological evolution model is reproduced, along with an analogous model of random replicators, the latter eventually experiencing topology changes. In the absence of topology changes, both types of models self-organize to a critical state. Species extinctions in the replicator system degenerates the self-organization to a random walk, as does vanis...
